IRELAND RESEARCH GUIDES
Grenham, John, Tracing Your Irish Ancestors: The Complete Guide (2nd ed. Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, Ltd., 2000). This work is good for inventories of record sources by county. The discussion of Irish records is good but not complete. It has good Roman Catholic parish maps by county. It compliments Ryan’s book.
Ouimette, David S., Finding Your Irish Ancestors: A Beginner’s Guide (Orem, Utah: Ancestry.com, 2005). This work is dedicated to the very basics in Irish records and research. It is well suited and solid book for the very beginner.
Radford, Dwight A. and Kyle J. Betit, A Genealogist’s Guide to Discovering Your Irish Ancestors (Cincinnati, Ohio: Betterway Books, 2001. Half of this book is dedicated to tracing the Irish in countries other than Ireland to try and find immigrant origins. The other half of the book is dedicated to general Irish sources and strategies. It is not intended to provide inventories of records by Irish county, therefore, it compliments Grenham’s and Ryan’s books which do. This work does provide specifics for emigration is and immigration research which Grenham and Ryan’s books do not.
Ryan, James G. Irish Records: Sources for Family & Local History (rev. ed. Salt Lake City, Utah: Ancestry, 1997). A good book with nice civil parish maps and presentation. While good for reviewing what is available by Irish county it does not intend to go in-depth into general record types and how to use them. It compliments Grenham’s book.
Lalor, Brian, editor,: The Encyclopedia of Ireland, (New Haven and London, Yale University Press: 2003). A wonderful compilation of Irish history. Beautifully illustrated. More than 1200 pages and fully indexed.
