CANADA CENSUS

Canada as we know it today did not exist until 1867. Prior to that time it was functioned as colonies of the British Commonwealth. From 1841 to 1867, Ontario was known as Canada West and Quebec was known as Canada East. Due to boundary changes over time, the modern provincial names are being given in the list below for a quick reference. The information given in the censuses can include names, ages, country of birth, and religion. The more recent censuses asked additional information. Not all of them are currently indexed. For this reason, a standard price is being quoted. If the circumstances of the censuses require additional comments you will be contacted. Censuses available for search and a copy will be provided if found are as follows:

CANADA LAND

Many people went to Canada specifically for land. They came in groups, as families, and as individuals. It was wide open land that needed settlers so the government made it attractive for people to homestead and obtain land grants. The records generated for the initial granting of land varies in content depending on when and where a person was applying for land grants. Some give detailed information while others only the basics. The indexes to the following government land programs can be searched by province as follows:

Alberta: 1870-1930 (index to land grants)

British Columbia: 1870-1930 (index to land grants)

Manitoba: 1870-1930 (index to land grants)

New Brunswick: 1783-1918 (index to petitions) and 1784-1997 (index to grants)

Nova Scotia: 1769-1799 (index to petitions) and Cape Breton 1787-1843 (index to petitions)

Ontario: 1780-1920 (index to land grants)

Prince Edward Island: 1784-1914 (index to petitions, grants and warrants)

Saskatchewan: 1872-1930 (index to homesteads)

Note: $25 per name per province. Please provide locality that the ancestor lived within the province and the approximate date they would have received land.
